COMMISSION FOR SARAJEVO HOUSING ISSUES ESTABLISHED

( Editorial: --> 8236 ) SARAJEVO, Mar 9 (Hina) - Representatives of Sarajevo Canton, the Office of the international High Representative for the implementation of the Dayton peace agreement and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Monday signed a memorandum of understanding, under which a housing commission was established to the effect of ensuring that refugees return to their pre-war flats in the Bosnian capital. The commission, whose work will be monitored by representatives of the UNHCR and the High Representative's office, will include representatives of the Bosnian Presidency chairman's office, the vice-president of the Bosnian Council of Ministers, the Sarajevo prefect and representatives of cantonal ministries. The commission will have the task of ensuring the return of refugees to flats in the Sarajevo area which are illegally being used by other tenants, and to monitor the reconstruction of demolished flats to which pre-war tenants will return. It will also deal with the issue of refugee flats in which Sarajevo authorities temporarily accommodated other refugees. Pre-war tenants will be enabled to return to their flats once people currently occupying them return to their homes. The commission will also be authorised to allocate the use of flats in which pre-war tenancy rights holders are not interested. Sarajevo Canton prefect Midhat Haracic said the newly-established commission was the first step in the implementation of the Sarajevo Declaration which envisages the return of 20,000 non-Bosniaks (Muslims) to the Bosnian capital.
