WASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Hina) - The organisation "Freedom House" has given marks four (4) and four (4) to Croatia for its record in political rights and civil liberties respectively, and thus Croatia has been classified in a group of
partially free countries. This Washington-based organisation for the promotion of human rights on Tuesday released its biennial report where it assessed the situation concerning political rights and human liberties in 192 countries of the world. Of them, 85 were proclaimed free, while 59, including Croatia, were regarded by this organisation as partially free states. The previous report, just as the latest one of "Freedom House" put Croatia in the same category. The latest report, however, added that "Croatia receives a downward trend arrow due to corruption, harassment of the press and failure to repatriate refugees." WASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Hina) - The organisation "Freedom House" has
given marks four (4) and four (4) to Croatia for its record in
political rights and civil liberties respectively, and thus
Croatia has been classified in a group of partially free
countries.
This Washington-based organisation for the promotion of human
rights on Tuesday released its biennial report where it assessed
the situation concerning political rights and human liberties in
192 countries of the world. Of them, 85 were proclaimed free, while
59, including Croatia, were regarded by this organisation as
partially free states.
The previous report, just as the latest one of "Freedom House" put
Croatia in the same category. The latest report, however, added
that "Croatia receives a downward trend arrow due to corruption,
harassment of the press and failure to repatriate refugees."
Two pages, dedicated to the situation in Croatia, gave already
known assessments about the political circumstances, the state
control over the media, the obstruction of the work of independent
papers, the situation as regards religious freedoms, and
hindrances in the return of Serbs in Croatia.
Getting the mark 4 at the scale which begins with the highest mark 7
and the worst 1, Croatia is at the middle of the rank-list of
"Freedom House". But out of European countries, only Albania,
Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Yugoslavia received worse marks
than Croatia.
Generally speaking, "Freedom House" has registered progress of
freedoms and rights in the world. At the moment just 25 percent of
countries is viewed as not free, but 35.8 percent of the total world
population lives in them.
