ZAGREB, Dec 20 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union's Presidency
on Monday unanimously decided to recommend to the Croatian
Government that elections for the President of the Republic be held
on January 24, 2000, chairman of today's session Ivan Aralica told
reporters.#L#
Aralica said that also proposed was that the session for the
extended HDZ Head Committee, scheduled for December 26, be held on
January 5, 2000.
The nomination of candidates began at the moment today's session
ended and will last until the session of the extended Head
Committee, Aralica said.
The names of candidates for the President of the Republic were not
discussed, it was stressed however that the HDZ would forward the
names of all candidates to the session of the extended Head
Committee, which will be attended by about 1,000 delegates, said
HDZ Secretary General Drago Krpina.
In case there will be too many candidates, there will be a secret
ballot, namely in two rounds and two candidates with the majority of
votes will enter the second round.
In case there is only one candidate, the person would have to
receive more than 50 percent of the vote of those who attended the
session of the extended Head Committee. On the contrary, the
process will be repeated, however, that candidate cannot run
again.
Today's session of the HDZ Presidency did not discuss the
possibility that if the future president of the state be from the
HDZ, the person should freeze his membership in the party, Krpina
said.
He stressed, however, that the possibility was not considered
because it was not realistic to expect a person who received the
support of his party to keep his distance from the party's policy
after the election.
