In line with the decision, signed by Pavletic in the Croatian
National Sabor Saturday, elections at polling stations in Croatia
will be held on Monday, January 3, 2000, while elections at polling
stations outside of Croatia are scheduled for January 2 and 3.
President of the Sabor was made acting President of the Republic for
the duration of the temporary disability of President Tudjman to
perform his duties on Friday. The decision was initiated by the
Croatian Government and passed by the Croatian Constitutional
Court Friday.
In his statement, Pavletic pointed to the passing of the
Constitutional Law, according to which, Constitutional duties and
powers of a temporary disabled President of the Republic were to be
transferred to the President of the Croatian National Sabor. In
this capacity I signed the decision on calling the elections,
Pavletic stressed.
I made this decision in accordance with recommendations made by the
Croatian Democratic Union's Presidency session held on Friday.
"As the ruling party, the HDZ, as it is a custom in all democratic
societies in the world, has this privilege and the right to set the
date of elections", Pavletic stressed.
Pavletic pointed to the fact that Croatia is facing a difficult
situation, adding that after the period of reconstruction and
development, and difficult war experiences, the upcoming elections
must be held in an atmosphere which will make clear to everyone that
Croatia's democracy is mature and that no one will be able to deny
the results achieved at the elections. "Then it will be clear who
gained the trust of the electoral body to lead Croatia in line with
their programmes in the upcoming period", Pavletic said.
In his statement, Pavletic expressed hope that all those on whom
this depended, would advocate peaceful elections, and that
elections be held in circumstances expected in a democratic
country.
