ZAGREB, Dec 1 (Hina) - The Ostra Peninsula or Cape Ostra, the
southernmost tip of Croatia, better known as Prevlaka, is under the
control of UN observers. Research and documentation on this
peninsula show that since the 15th century it has been a part of
Croatia's territory and state, in economic, cadastral and
political sense.
This was said during Wednesday's promotion of a book entitled "Cape
Ostra In History and Politics (unofficial translation)," by author
Trpimir Macan. The book has been published by the "Matica hrvatska"
cultural organisation.
In addition to a historical review of Cape Ostra, historian Macan
also wrote about the latest developments in the area, following the
events on the peninsula since 1991, Croatia's efforts to bring
about the withdrawal of the occupying forces (Serbian and
Montenegrin units) from Ostra as well as constant pressure of
Serbian and Montenegrin party to move the border line just in the
area of Ostra.
During the presentation of Macan's work, it was accentuated how
much this peninsula's position is politically and militarily
important.
Research and documents say that since the Middle Ages (for almost
600 years) this part of the land has been belonging to Croatian
areas and to Croatia's state nowadays.
Hrvoje Kacic, the head of the State Border Commission, said in Cape
Ostra, Croatia's territorial integrity was impinged.
"There is nothing contentious in the frontier with Montenegro, but
Prevlaka is present on the agenda of UN Security Council every six
months," Kacic said adding this was only a political issue.
