ZAGREB, Nov 16 (Hina) - A seminar entitled "Vukovar-Croatia-World:
Vukovar, Eight Years Later" opened in Zagreb on Tuesday.
The event is held on the occasion of November 18, Remembrance Day,
which is marked in memory of Vukovar victims of 1991.
On that day, the Yugoslav People's Army and Serb paramilitary
forces entered the town following a three-month siege and
shelling.
The meeting is attended by a dozen lecturers from the fields of
defence, science, and spiritual disciplines. The purpose of the
event is to protect the facts about the defence of Vukovar and the
suffering of its residents from oblivion and revision, as well as to
promote universal moral principles the Homeland War was based on.
The memory of Vukovar and the Homeland War, the Croatian heroism and
the crimes which cannot be forgiven and for which there is no
statute of limitations, have to be refreshed, said Vesna Skare
Ozbolt, envoy for the President of the Republic. "Vukovar is a
symbol of resistance, of forgiving the enemy, but not the
criminals, as well as a symbol which reminds of the indifference of
the international community".
A Parliament Vice-President Jadranka Kosor recalled the defence of
Vukovar in autumn 1991 and the Ovcara mass grave, out of which 938
victims, Croatian soldiers and civilians, were exhumed, and where
200 wounded from the city hospital were executed. "One should
recall the time of genocide and the annihilation of environment and
culture, when the Serbian evil could have been prevented if only the
international community had wanted it", Kosor said.
The seminar on Vukovar is held under the auspices of the Croatian
President and is organised by the Institute of Social Sciences "Ivo
Pilar", in cooperation with the Federation of Homeland War
Associations.
