trade unions began in the southern Croatian town of Dubrovnik on

After the ceremonial opening of the conference, President of the
Croatian Association of Independent Trade Unions (SSSH), Davor
Juric, and the head of the Montenegrin Trade Unions Federation,
Danilo Popovic held a news conference at which Popovic, on behalf of
Montenegrin workers, apologised to Dubrovnik unionists for the
aggression against Croatia in which Montenengrins had taken part.
The unionists' conference, dedicated to preparations for the 21st
century, has been organised by the SSSH Centre for Industrial
Democratisation in cooperation with foundations "Hans Bockler" and
"Frierich Ebert".
The event has gathered about 50 participants form ten European
countries and the United States as well as Leroy Trotman, the head
of the International Confederation of Independent Unions, an
association which is active in 140 countries.
During his opening speech Davor Juric said the purpose of this
conference would be to find methods and directions for assistance
for Croatia on its path toward a social and law-based state.
Juric assessed that the future of his country lay in the admission
into European integration processes.
