SPLIT, Oct 16 (Hina) - Mario Ivekovic, the Zagreb commissioner of
the Association of Croatian Independent Trade Unions (HSS), on
Saturday was elected as the President of the Croatian Workers'
Alliance (HRS).
After being active abroad for 8 years, the HRS resumed its work
Croatia on Saturday, when the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS)
organised its renewal and election assembly in the southern coastal
city of Split.
First tasks of the HRS will be to establish a net of Croatian
workers' solidarity which should cover all interested in changes
and improvement of workers' position, to prepare expert programmes
for companies in trouble and find money for investments, Ivekovic
said.
"Most citizens want changes, but they will not happen if we only
change the ruling party. The real changes are possible only if
everybody strengthens their own positions with the assistance of
labour unions, peasants' and workers' societies and non-
governmental organisations. Thus one should increase pressure on
every authority, as ruling rather than the well-being of people is
the primary goal of each (political) party," Ivekovic said citing
his candidacy for the HRS leader.
There was no other candidate for this post. Over 700 deputies
attended the Split assembly, and just one of them voted against
Ivekovic.
