ZAGREB, Oct 3 (Hina) - The "Opposition Six" parties on Wednesday
said they expected the single list of all voters in Croatia they had
requested from the State Directorate for State Administration and
Local Self-Government to be handed to them on computer discs or
CD's.
In a statement signed by Bozo Kovacevic, the political secretary
for the Opposition Six, the parties believe this would enable
speedy and efficient checking of voters' lists.
The Opposition Six said they decided on computer discs because of a
previous statement by the head of the State Directorate
for State Administration and Local Self-Government that it would be
impossible to print the whole list on paper due to technical
problems.
The statement also points to "instances in previous elections when,
among other things, the failure to regulate voters' lists had
enabled the manipulation and rigging of election results in favour
of the ruling party".
Emphasising the importance of securing fair preparations and a fair
election procedure and vote count, the Opposition Six said any
trace of suspicion regarding failures or deliberate manipulation
of election results in any stage of the election process might
additionally damage Croatia's reputation and be detrimental to its
international position.
The parties also said they would request their members in all units
of local self-government to check voters' lists.
The Opposition Six includes the Social Democratic Party (SDP),
Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), Liberal Party (LS), Croatian
People's Party (HNS), and the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS).
