ZAGREB, Oct 29 (Hina) - A team of cardiologists who follow the
health condition of an ICTY indictee, Mladen Naletilic Tuta, on
Friday published a statement saying there are no acute
complications following the operation of his coronary arteries,
but their patient is refusing a part of the therapy, due to his
deteriorating mental condition.
The Croatian judiciary okayed the extradition of Naletilic to the
Hague-based International War Crimes Tribunal for former
Yugoslavia (ICTY), but Croatian Justice Minister had to postpone
the implementation of that ruling due to Naletilic's poor health.
On October 22, an operation was performed upon three occluded
coronary arteries, and the doctors' team has stated it is planning
similar surgery on the most complex hardening of the right coronary
artery. The team added that this intervention would be technically
more complex and riskier.
As Naletilic's mental state has deteriorated, this patient is
opposing some diagnostic methods and a part of therapy, including
the planned surgery on the right coronary artery, read the latest
statement of the cardiologists' team.
It has been explained to the patient that the remaining hardening of
the right coronary artery poses a threat to his life. Naletilic,
nevertheless, persists in his refusal. That's why a psychiatrist is
conducting psychotherapy and giving him adequate medicine, the
statement said.
The statement has been signed by Doctor Ivo Cikes, the head of the
hospital where Naletilic is being treated.
The ICTY charges Naletilic with crimes against humanity, serious
breaches of the Geneva Conventions and the laws and customs of war
in Mostar, south Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Deciding to postpone Naletilic's transfer to The Hague, Justice
Minister Separovic proposed to the ICTY to send an international
commission of doctors to check his health and give its opinion on
Zagreb cardiologists' findings.
