The newly-elected judges are Smiljko Sokol, Marijan Hranjski, Ivan
Mrkonjic, Vice Vukojevic, Petar Klaric, Emilija Rajic, Jasna
Omejec, and Ivan Matija.
The eight new Constitutional Court judges, who were voted on in a
package, received support from 71 MPs whereas five MPs abstained.
Most of the Opposition Six representatives walked out of the hall
before the vote, claiming the procedure envisaged for the election
of judges was not respected.
The Opposition Six includes the Social Democratic Party (SDP),
Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), Croatian People's Party
(HNS), Liberal Party (LS), Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS), and
the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS).
Representatives of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Croatian
Party of Rights (HSP), Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HKDU),
Croatian Peasants' National Party (HSNS), minority MPs and Stjepan
Radic of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) remained in the hall.
The Croatian Constitutional Court has 11 judges which are suggested
by the House of Counties and elected by the House of
Representatives. They are elected for a period of eight years and
the newly-elected judges will replace eight incumbent judges whose
mandates expire on December 6.
