ZAGREB/OSIJEK, Oct 20 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Ministry on Wednesday confirmed that 12 detainees of Serb nationality, charged with war crimes, stopped taking prison food in the county jail in Osijek on Monday, October 18. They said
the reason for their refusal of prison food was the slowness of the court proceedings, but have no complaints about the conditions in detainment, a statement signed by Assistant Justice Minister Vjekoslav Jazbec said Wednesday. Eight other detainees of Serb nationality, charged with crimes other than war crimes, expressed solidarity with the detainees by also refusing the food. One of them, however, began eating Wednesday. The Justice Ministry stressed this was not a hunger strike because the detainees were eating food they receive as packages or which they buy in the prison cafeteria. Presidents of county courts in Osijek and Vukovar were informed about the detainees' refusal to take prison food.(hina
