CRO PRESIDENT RECEIVES NEW BELGIAN AMBASSADOR

ZAGREB, Sept 16 (Hina) - The integration of countries of Central and East Europe, Croatia included, with the European Union is a historical imperative and moral duty on Europe's part, newly appointed Belgian Ambassador to Croatia Luc Liebaut said in Zagreb on Thursday while handing credentials to the Croatian President. Liebaut said Belgium firmly believes in a future in Europe for Croatia. Belgium supports Croatia and, as a trustworthy partner, will assist Croatia in preparations for the impending process. Croatian President Franjo Tudjman said Croatia was open for integration with European institutions and cooperation in all fields. He expressed hope Belgium and other European countries will show more understanding for Croatia's objections to tendencies which would return it to Balkan and Southeast European frameworks. Croatia is willing to normalise relations and develop political and economic relations with countries in Southeast Europe, but is not willing to integrate with them, President Tudjman said. He added any attempt to reform the former Yugoslav federation would be tragic, not only for Croatia and its people, but for the entire region. (hina) ha jn
