DUBROVNIK, Sept 15 (Hina) - "All agreements confirm that Prevlaka
belongs to Croatia, and we are supported in this by the United
States, however, due to other interests (Kosovo, the situation in
Yugoslavia), in agreement with the United States, we were not ready
to additionally destabilise Montenegro", Croatian Foreign
Minister Mate Granic said in Dubrovnik on Wednesday.
As regards the Bjelotina hill in Konavle (also in the Dubrovnik
area), it is still illegally under control of the Federal Republic
of Yugoslavia but this can be resolved as part of the process of
marking the borders and not through military means, Granic said.
Granic today participated in an extraordinary session of the
Dubrovnik County Assembly, which discussed Croatia's borders with
neighbouring countries.
As regards the border between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia near
Neum, it has been determined by an international agreement and in
line with an absolutely authentic document from 1974, Granic said.
The Foreign Minister also said Croatia was interested in open
borders.
Prevlaka is a peninsula on the border between Croatia and
Yugoslavia (Montenegro), toward which Yugoslavia has territorial
pretensions. Since the withdrawal of the Yugoslav People's Army
(JNA), the area has been under U.N. military observers' control,
which is the cause of considerable discontent among the local
residents, who have been unable to use their property for years now.
Yugoslavia, on the other hand, is ignoring the fact that the borders
of the former Yugoslav republics are internationally recognised
and is stalling the signing of an agreement on borders.
