ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - The Opposition Six demands that all
editors-in-chief working on Croatian Radio Television (HRT), who
are members of party bodies, resign their offices, since their
position is incompatible with the existing Law on Croatian Radio-
Television, the coordinator for the Opposition Six, Vlado Gotovac,
told reporters on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Opposition Six in
Zagreb, Gotovac said that objective reporting, along with the
election law, was a guarantee of a democratic and fair election. He
added the Opposition Six wanted the Parliament to discuss HRT's
work. #L#
Gotovac assessed that the HRT was becoming the mouthpiece of the
ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and announced that
Opposition Six representatives would not return to the HRT
Council.
The Opposition Six has decided to establish a body which will
monitor the whole TV programme and report on all cases of abuse,
manipulation and other forms of misinforming the public through the
HRT. This body should be established in several days and it would
include representatives of the Opposition Six parties - the Social
Democratic Party (SDP), Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS),
Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS), Croatian People's Party (HNS),
Liberal Party (LS) and the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS).
One of the demands of the Opposition Six is for the presidents of
parliamentary parties to be granted the same treatment HDZ
officials have on the HRT.
The Opposition Six is ready to sign an agreement on the HRT with the
HDZ, if their requests regarding an objective and non-party public
television are met. If it proves that these requests will not be met
within a reasonable deadline, the Opposition Six will make a
decision on further steps to be taken regarding the HRT, Gotovac
said.
The Opposition Six believe the proposal on covering election
campaigning in the electronic media, which was made known yesterday
by a group of reporters from the electronic media, called Forum 21,
is a good solution.
