"Humanitarian workers bring hope and help worldwide when it is urgent," the head of the UNICEF office in Croatia, Lora Vidovic, said at the ceremony.
Today's event at the monument dedicated to UN personnel, who lost their lives while serving to advance the cause of peace, was organised by representatives of the UN agencies operating in Croatia.
In an effort to raise public awareness of humanitarian assistance worldwide and the people who risk their lives in order to provide it, in 2008 the General Assembly designated 19 August as World Humanitarian Day.
