Kosor says it's wrong to prolong appointments of ambassadors

RIJEKA, Aug 15 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor has said that it would be wrong to prolong the appointments of Croatian ambassadors to several foreign capitals and that this procedure should be conducted in compliance with the relevant legislation.

In response to reporters' questions on Monday in Rijeka after she attended Holy Mass in the Marian shrine of Trsat, she said that more than a month ago her cabinet had sent its proposals for ambassadors' nominations to the President of Republic Ivo Josipovic but that she had not yet received any answer.

Kosor announced another letter to Josipovic, adding that she would propose to him to hold a meeting on this topic as soon as possible.

As for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic's comment on the ambassadorial nominations, Kosor said she was surprised at the SDP chief's comment.

Currently, Croatia's ambassadorial posts in several countries, including the United States, are vacant awaiting the regular rotation. The media has been quoted Milanovic as saying that he was in favour of postponing the appointment of new ambassadors for the period after the parliamentary elections, likely to be held by the end of this year.

PM Kosor said that the appointments should be conducted in accordance with the law and not as one pleases. Otherwise, any procrastination could be interpreted as politicisation, she stressed.

It would be wrong now to wait for the appointments as this is about friendly countries and allies in which we have to have ambassadors, Kosor said adding that vacant ambassadorial posts must be filled in by career diplomats and professionals and not according to clientelism.
