PREMIER MATESA OPENS NEW SECTION OF ZAGREB-LIPOVAC HIGHWAY

SLAVONSKI BROD, July 23 (Hina) - Croatia's Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa, on Friday ceremonially opened a new section of the Zagreb-Lipovac highway. The 17-kilometre-long newly-constructed section, passing between Oprisavci and Velika Kopanica in Slavonski Brod-Posavina County, eastern Croatia, was built by the consortium called "Green Main Road" with 1,700 workers and 4,000 people who had part-time jobs during this project. The section was finished almost three months before the deadline at the price of 307 million kuna (41.5 million US dollars), while the preliminary estimates were that 400.15 million kuna would be necessary for this job. Commending Slavonian road-builders and prefects of four Slavonian counties, Premier Matesa said it was the first project of such kind to have been conducted through public works and by Croatian workforce and it was totally financed from the state budget. Commending Slavonian road-builders and prefects of four Slavonian counties, Premier Matesa said it was the first project of such kind to have been conducted through public works and by Croatian workforce and it was totally financed from the state budget. As this consortium did the job so well, it will be chosen by the Government to continue constructing the next section of the Zagreb- Lipovac highway toward the town of Zupanja. The 26-kilometre-long section should be built by 2001, Matesa added. Croatian Transport and Communications Minister Zeljko Luzavec pointed to the great importance of this motorway, as a part of a European road corridor connecting the western and eastern parts of the Continent. At the moment, there are about 16,000 cars daily on this road, while up to 30,000 vehicles can be expected daily in this direction after a bridge across the Sava river be finished near the town of Slavonski Brod, Minister Luzavec predicted.
