In order to promote breast-feeding and point to its significance,
this year, from August 1 to 7, UNICEF organises the International
Week of Breastfeeding under the motto "Breastfeeding - Education
for Life", it was said at a press conference in Zagreb on Thursday.
Quoting research results, the head of the UNICEF Office in Croatia,
Nada Marasovic, said children who were breast-fed have a higher IQ
and stronger immunity and socialise with other children easier than
children who were bottle-fed.
Josip Grguric, the head of a programme for the promotion of breast-
feeding in Croatia, said that women who are breast-feeding are less
prone to inflammatory diseases and bleeding, and are less affected
by breast and ovarian cancer. In Croatia, unlike other countries,
it is still not prohibited to advertise the so-called surrogate
food, because the population is being falsely informed that
mother's milk can be replaced, he said.
Maternity wards at which newly-born babies are is in the same room
with their mothers are contributing to the culture of breast-
feeding. Fifteen out of the 32 maternity wards in Croatia are
implementing such programmes, which puts Croatia at the third
place, right after Sweden and Norway.
