ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - Opposition MPs in the Croatian National Sabor's House of Representatives on Wednesday strongly opposed a bill on changes to the Law on Incentives and Subsidies in Agriculture and Fishery, which envisage

ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - Opposition MPs in the Croatian National
Sabor's House of Representatives on Wednesday strongly opposed a
bill on changes to the Law on Incentives and Subsidies in
Agriculture and Fishery, which envisage smaller incentives and
subsidies for milk industry.
The Opposition believes the proposal could have been submitted only
in the form of increased incentives and subsidies. To save some
US$3.42 million on milk cannot help the budget, Opposition MPs
believe.
The bill, discussed in urgent parliamentary procedure, is
connected with the proposed budgetary revision. It envisages a
decrease of incentives for milk from 0.90 kuna ($0.12) to 0.80 kuna
($0.10) in strategic areas, and from 0.55 ($0.07) to 0.50 kuna
($0.06) in other areas.
Although it supported the bill, the Committee for Agriculture,
Village and Farming, warned the bill would have an extremely
negative effect on the development of farming in Croatia.
Opposition MPs criticised the Committee's stance. Zlatko Tomcic of
the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) said the Government, but also
the Committee, with stances like today's, would definitely destroy
Croatia's agriculture.
The MPs said they opposed the bill also because the production of
milk in the country was still insufficient.
Dino Debeljuh of the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) remarked,
"the Dubrovacka Banka has cost the state a billion German marks, and
the incentives for milk (would cost it) only six million".
Pavao Sarcevic of the HSS believes the reduction of incentives for
milk will not help the budget. Sarcevic also protested against
patching up holes in the budget at the expense of farmers.
The MPs today also discussed the final bill on the accelerated
pension plan. Although they commended the introduction of such a
plan for truck and bus drivers and professional fishermen, the MPs
said it should also be introduced for a set of professions,
including workers in the asbestos industry and journalists.
