In 1941, Mrs. and Mr. Hocenski saved Ela Engelman and her newly-born
baby Zdenka. The "Righteous among Nations" title was bestowed on
Hocenskis, at a proposal of the Jewish Community in Osijek which had
forwarded testimonies of the saved Mrs. Engelman and data about the
activities of Mr. Franjo Hocenski to the Yad Vashem memorial centre
in Jerusalem.
Mrs. Ela Engelman died recently in Orahovica where her daughter
still lives.
The Hocenski couple received a statement directly from the Yad
Vashem centre, informing them that they were awarded the title
"Righteous among the Nations." Israeli Ambassador for Croatia,
Nathan Meron will confer this charter on them, while their names
will be carved into the Wall of the Righteous in the Holocaust
Museum, read the statement issued by the Osijek Jewish Community.
