DUBROVNIK, July 10 (Hina) - An extensive monograph "Dubrovnik
Summer Festival 1950-1999. Croatia" was presented on Saturday in
the Rector's Palace prior to this evening's ceremonial opening.
The book is about most significant events which have occurred since
the Festival was established in 1950.
The monograph was presented by the editor Vlaho Benkovic and by
Josko Juvancic, Frano Matusic, Jagoda Marticencevic and Tomo
Vlahutin.
The book is of an exceptional documentary importance as it contains
all date the Festival, while the Festival's public records burnt to
the ashes during the Yugoslav aggression against Croatia.
The festival in Dubrovnik, today a town protected as a part of the
world cultural heritage, is celebrating its golden jubilee this
summer.
It was imagined as an attempt to harmonise the Renaissance and
Baroque atmosphere of Dubrovnik and the living spirit of drama and
music.
The works of Marin Drzic, Ivan Gundulic, Ivo Vojnovic as well as of
Shakespeare, Goldoni, the Greek tragedians, Moliere, Corneille and
Goethe were performed all these years.
The musical part of the festival has already grown into a real
review of top solo artists and ensembles from all over the world.
The high standard of performance was complemented in Dubrovnik by a
functional use of the attractive and acoustic buildings, above all
of the atrium of the Rector's Palace. From the beginning of the
seventies very great attention was paid to the definition of the
nature of the music and concert programme in which there were more
and more representatives of new currents in music as well as
endeavours to breathe new life into old, especially Croatian,
music.
