SARAJEVO, July 9 (Hina) - The international High Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Carlos Westendorp, on Friday called on Mehmed Alagic, the mayor of Sanski Most (a town in north-western Bosnia) and one of the best known war-time
generals of the Bosnian army, to resign or suspend his duties until the completion of court proceedings, initiated against him by a local court for abuse of office and official authority. In a letter to Alagic, the High Representative warned that his referring to his immunity on the basis of his mandate as the town mayor was not acceptable. SARAJEVO, July 9 (Hina) - The international High Representative to
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Carlos Westendorp, on Friday called on Mehmed
Alagic, the mayor of Sanski Most (a town in north-western Bosnia)
and one of the best known war-time generals of the Bosnian army, to
resign or suspend his duties until the completion of court
proceedings, initiated against him by a local court for abuse of
office and official authority.
In a letter to Alagic, the High Representative warned that his
referring to his immunity on the basis of his mandate as the town
mayor was not acceptable.
Westendorp called on the Sanski Most Municipal Council to deny
Alagic the right to immunity at its next session, adding the
international community would otherwise become fully involved in
the case.
During the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Alagic was the commander of
the BH Army 7th Corps and his units carried out one the major war
operations, seizing the strategically important Mt Vlasic.
After the signing of the Dayton agreement, Alagic left military
service and was elected mayor at a municipal election in his
hometown.
The court proceedings, initiated two months ago, charge Alagic with
abusing his office and official authority for personal gain.
