ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - The workers at oil factory "Zvijezda" have not been given dismissal notices, nor could that have been the reason for today's protest, the Croatian government's Media and Public Relations Office said in a
statement on Tuesday. The factory's workers protested in downtown Zagreb by blocking traffic at the Drziceva and Branimirova Street cross-roads, citing the dismissal of 232 workers as the reason. The government statement however pointed out a labour inspection at the factory showed that not one worker has been dismissed. The dismissal notices obviously could not have been the cause for the protest, the statement said, adding it is a question of pressurising the government to grant "Agrokor", a concern of which "Zvijezda" is part, a DM68 million guarantee. ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - The workers at oil factory "Zvijezda" have
not been given dismissal notices, nor could that have been the
reason for today's protest, the Croatian government's Media and
Public Relations Office said in a statement on Tuesday.
The factory's workers protested in downtown Zagreb by blocking
traffic at the Drziceva and Branimirova Street cross-roads, citing
the dismissal of 232 workers as the reason.
The government statement however pointed out a labour inspection at
the factory showed that not one worker has been dismissed.
The dismissal notices obviously could not have been the cause for
the protest, the statement said, adding it is a question of
pressurising the government to grant "Agrokor", a concern of which
"Zvijezda" is part, a DM68 million guarantee.
The government assessed the protest as entirely unacceptable, the
statement pointed out.
Violeta Colic, head of "Agrokor's" public relations, told Hina on
Tuesday the dismissal notices will be handed, adding the "Zvijezda"
management board had notified the trade union.
The notices have not been issued yet because the management must
first initiate the winding up of "Zvijezda" plant in Zagreb before a
competent commercial court. Only when the court reaches a decision
to initiate the liquidation, may the workers be handed dismissal
notices.
The management in Zagreb is reducing the number of workers because a
new plant is being built in Cepin.
"Agrokor", supported by Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ivan
Djurkic, suggested that surplus labour in the Zagreb plant be
employed in Cepin. The new plant should be built via foreign loans,
while the government should give "Agrokor" a DM68 million
guarantee.
The Labour Ministry however believes "Agrokor" has not used all of
its possibilities of employing workers within the concern.
