ZAGREB, June 29 (Hina) - Luka Trconic of the Croatian Peasants'
Party (HSS), asked the Croatian National Sabor to urge the
Government to find an acceptable solution to demands of Croatian
farmers who have been protesting since Saturday and blocking roads
in northern and eastern Croatia.
At Tuesday's resumption of the 41st session of the House of
Representatives Trconic said the Sabor cannot ignore the fact that
the number of protest sites has been increasing in north Croatia.
Peasants commenced demonstrations, organised by the Croatian
Farmers' Association, on Saturday demanding payment for last
year's crops and products, an increase in the purchase price for
this year's wheat to 1.32 kuna (0.18 dollars) per kilogram, and a
ban on the import of agricultural produce amounts of which are
sufficient on the Croatian market.
The President of the Sabor, Vlatko Pavletic, answered that the
parliament abode by its conclusions and laws it passed and was
expecting from the Government and farmers to resume negotiations.
We expect from the Government to find a solution and to ensure that
all money for farmers really reach them, Pavletic stressed adding
that he also hoped that farmers would accept sensible arguments in
order to come out of a situation which might harm the tourist
season.
Commenting on peasants' insistence on the ban on agricultural
produce, Pavletic said it would not be possible at the moment when
Croatia was negotiating with the World Trade Organisation. He
believes that the Croatian agriculture has good prospects in
producing healthy food.
The lower house completed Tuesday morning's work with discussions
on a package of laws on the intellectual ownership, a final bill on
the inspection of road traffic and roads and a final bill on the
state inspectorate.
This afternoon MPs are to discuss the intelligence and security
system.
