ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - Addressing a session of the Croatian
Democratic Union's (HDZ) Main Committee in Zagreb on Saturday,
which marked the party's tenth anniversary, the ruling party's vice
president, Ivic Pasalic, spoke about cooperation among
parliamentary parties.
The recent series of ultimate conditions the Opposition Six group
has set before the HDZ to even approach the realisation of a signed
agreement on new electoral legislation illustrates the current
relations among the group's parties, Pasalic said, adding this
showed that some in the opposition have become scared of a
consensus.
He assessed the differences of interests among the Opposition Six
parties were coming to the surface with increased frequency.
The bipolarity on the political scene, Pasalic said, perceived in
public as a division on parties of the Opposition Six and the HDZ, is
among else leading to an accelerated strengthening of the Social
Democratic Party at the cost of the other five.
Pasalic asserted part of the opposition was systematically
politicising all social issues. HDZ's answer is to not abandon
dialogue and consensus, nor leave its flag to others, but firmly
hold the political initiative.
Security and force need to be shown for the sake of the national
interests of Croatian democracy, Pasalic said. It is also necessary
to curb the premature pre-electoral fever shaking all political
parties, he added.
To further develop democracy, it is necessary to break the
dangerous spiralling of mutual mistrust which, he said, led him a
few days ago to urge the passing of a fair play code in the upcoming
electoral match.
Pasalic assessed that, considering what had been achieved so far,
the HDZ should not bother with the electoral strategy and tactics of
the Opposition Six and the other opposition parties.
In the new, entirely peace-time conditions, we must realise and
accept that our HDZ-created Croatian state and previous great and
historical merits are no longer sufficient for winning the
elections, he said.
Our task now is to offer the citizens of Croatia a vision of
Croatia's future in the third millennium, a vision of Croatia
standing on the foundations of Christian solidarity, economic
effectiveness, and social justice, Pasalic concluded.
