Amnesty International expressed concern about charges which had been filed against reporters in Croatia, pointing out Viktor Ivancic and Marinko Culic, reporters of the Feral Tribune weekly, and former editor-in-chief of the Globus weekly Davor Butkovic. The report read that perpetrators of crimes committed after the Croatian military and police operation "Storm", which took place in 1995 and by which the greatest part of the Croatian territory was liberated from the Serb occupation, have not been punished. AIH also pointed to the abuse of police authority, adding that two persons in Croatia died of injuries caused by police brutality. The situation in the world continues to demonstrate the violent side of governments and regimes, AIH said. Executions have been conducted in 36 countries, prisoners of conscience have been detained in 78 countries, people have been tortured and maltreated by security forces, police, and other state authorities in 125 countries, and persons have been registered as missing in 37 countries. Kosovo represents Europe's burning issue. Cruellest forms of the violation of human rights have been demonstrated in that southern Yugoslav province. Amnesty International have been systematically observing and reporting on the situation in southern Serbia during the past ten years. The United States gained a bad reputation due to the capital punishment and inhumane and humiliating treatments of prisoners. Amnesty International Croatia reported that Amnesty International had launched a campaign to promote entering the 21st century without the capital punishment, which would be a major step forward in the promotion and protection of human rights.
