FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TRANSITION OPENED IN DUBROVNIK

DUBROVNIK, June 23 (Hina) - The fifth international conference on economies in transition was opened in the southern Croatian town of Dubrovnik on Wednesday. The three-day event, organised by the Croatian National Bank (HNB), was opened by Finance Minister Borislav Skegro and HNB Governor Marko Skreb. The conference, entitled "10 Years of Transition - What Have We Learned and What Is Ahead of Us", has gathered some 70 financial experts from countries in transition and representatives of international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and others. The fifth anniversary of the conference shows that the majority of countries in transition have overcome the initial problems in economy, and that the economies in most of those countries are on the road to recovery. "Croatia, which unlike other countries had been additionally burdened by the war, was also successful in that period", Skegro said. HNB Governor Skreb said the conference represented continued and organised monitoring of countries in transition. "Transition cannot be measured, but Croatia, according to most indicators, belongs to the upper section of the list of countries in transition", Skreb said. (hina) rml
