OSIJEK, June 18 (Hina) - A Croatian Pan-European forum "Challenges
of the 21st Century for Europe and the Pan-European Union" started
in the eastern Croatian town of Osijek on Friday.
The forum was opened with an international symposium on economic,
cultural, spiritual and urban heritage in the national, European
and global transition of the 21st century.
The forum, to last until June 20 and to be held in Osijek, Vukovar
and Aljmas, will be attended by more than 100 participants,
representatives of national Pan-European unions from several
European countries, scientists, politicians and cultural
workers.
Although western Balkans is being mentioned frequently in the
European Union, and although there are attempts to push Croatia
into associations it does not belong to, "it is necessary, now more
than ever, to stress that Croatia belongs to Europe and that it is
Europe", the president of the International Pan-European Union,
Otto von Hapsburg said at the forum.
"According to its position and history, Croatia must be interested
in wider international relations, because it is on the border
between the Latin and the Slavic Europe and the west-European and
east-European cultures", said Mislav Jezic, president of the
Croatian Pan-European Union.
About 20 domestic and foreign scientists and experts will address
the symposium and the Croatian Pan-European forum will continue
with a conference of the Croatian Pan-European Union and the 1st
Vukovar Festival of Chamber Music, to start today in Vukovar's Eltz
Castle.
