ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - A state of emergency was declared in the Lipik area (100 kilometres south-east of Zagreb) where the population must defend itself from flood caused by heavy rain on Tuesday. It was raining incessantly for
twelve hours and many roads and arable land were flooded. Some of the causes for such situation are clogged public drains and canals as well as partly lowered dikes. On Tuesday afternoon local citizens and employees of the Daruvar Water Management managed to build a dam and thwart water. According to the Lipik Information centre, cars cannot drive on a few flooded roads. Over 100 centimetres of rain per square metre fell in the Slatina area (150 kilometres east of Zagreb) by 07.00 pm Tuesday.
