VUKOVAR/VINKOVCI, June 22 (Hina) - A World Bank Vice-President Johannes Linn and his associates visited the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on Tuesday. Linn met Vukovar County Prefect Rudolf Koenig and Vukovar Mayor Vladimir Stengl.
After the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, the World Bank delegation visited the footwear factory "Borovo". The World Bank officials were acquainted with the efforts that were being made to restore production in the factory, which had been damaged in the war. The reconstruction of war-damaged infrastructure is the main obstacle to the development of production, the factory's representatives said. After the visit, Linn told reporters he was satisfied with his visit to Vukovar. He said this was his first visit to the town. Prefect Koenig said he had suggested for the World Bank to join in
the implementation of one of the projects Vukovar County had
presented at an international donors' conference, held last year in
Zagreb. The World Bank was also offered to participate in reviving
the county's agricultural and food industry.
Following the visit to Vukovar, the World Bank delegation visited
nearby Vinkovci, where they met the municipal leadership.
After the meeting, they visited the water pumping site in the suburb
of Kanovci, the construction of which the World Bank had financed
with US$4.5 million. The international financial institution is
also participating in the construction of a system for collecting
and processing waste water.
