ZAGREB, May 28 (Hina) - The Zagreb City Assembly on Friday held a
special session on the occasion of May 30, Croatian Statehood Day.
Assembly chairman Zlatko Canjuga, Mayor Marina Matulovic-
Dropulic, and special Croatian Presidential envoy Ivica Kostovic
wished the best to all citizens of Zagreb and Croatia.
Kostovic said Statehood Day was the time to assess all that has been
accomplished in the creation of the Croatian state, as well as an
expression of gratitude to all who have contributed.
In the past nine years, Zagreb has been the place of historic
decisions, a haven to the displaced and a stronghold in the defence
against the Serbian aggression, Kostovic said.
He was sure Zagreb would continue to prosper as a Croatian and
European city and successfully solve economic problems, implement
social policy and be the foundation of Croatia's political and
economic stability and progress.
Zagreb Mayor Matulovic-Dropulic said the ruling Croatian
Democratic Union party and President Franjo Tudjman were able to
recognise the historical moment and be the interpreter of the
Croatian people's aspirations.
Zagreb's contribution was great, the capital being during the
Serbian aggression the most important logistic support in the
defence of the country, and today one of the driving-wheels of
reconstruction and development, she said.
Zagreb City Assembly chairman Zlatko Canjuga said Statehood Day was
no mere historiographic date, but had an essential and existential
significance in the realisation of Croatia's centuries-old dream -
free, independent and democratic Croatia.
Canjuga emphasised the role Croatian President Tudjman played in
the creation of the Croatian state as the leader of national
renaissance.
Today's session was also attended by representatives of
parliament, the army, the police, the Church and religious
communities, political parties, trade unions, as well as
dignitaries in science, health, culture, and sports.
