ZAGREB, May 21 (Hina) - Six parties of the Croatian Opposition on
Friday proposed a meeting to the ruling Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) to take place on May 25.
Leaders of the six parties of the Croatian Opposition would present
their motion on an electoral model.
The meeting would be the final effort aimed at reaching a consensus
on the electoral law, the host of Friday's talks of the Opposition
Six, Zlatko Tomcic of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS), told
reporters.
He said the Opposition Six abides by the standpoint on electoral and
post-electoral cooperation, and added that closer cooperation
between the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian Social
Liberal Party (HSLS) would not jeopardise the joint standpoints of
the Opposition Six.
Tomcic and the presidents of the SDP, the HSLS, the Croatian
People's Party (HNS), the Liberal Party (LS) and the Istrian
Democratic Assembly (IDS), which make up the Opposition Six, spoke
very little about today's three-hour meeting closed to the public.
Tomcic told the press the Opposition Six had harmonised their views
on the electoral law they would present to the HDZ. The context of
their motion will be announced at next week's meeting.
Speaking about relations within the Opposition Six and further
cooperation among the six parties, Tomcic said the ways and
modalities of electoral cooperation would depend on electoral
rules and the parties' leaders' decisions.
Post-electoral cooperation will be based on electoral results and
no coalitions with the HDZ, he said.
Tomcic stressed the six opposition parties decided to associate to
contribute with their stands to the progress of democracy in
Croatia, and to solve key national and state problems.
