ZAGREB, May 7 (Hina) - Elections into the Croatian National
Parliament house of Representatives will most probably be held in
the last week of this year, spokesman for the ruling Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ), Ivica Ropus, said in Zagreb on Friday.
According to the law, the Lower House must be dissolved at least two
months before the elections, which could happen in October, said
Ropus.
Commenting on statements made by opposition leaders following
recent talks with President Tudjman about an election model, Ropus
said Tudjman had been interpreted one-sidedly.
A statement by the president of the Croatian Social Liberal Party
(HSLS) Drazen Budisa that "conflicts have occurred within the HDZ
regarding the electoral model and a group of HDZ members opposed
President Tudjman regarding the model of the electoral law," was
described by Ropus as incorrect.
Tudjman respected the suggestion of the Opposition Six, as
presented by Budisa. However, it was not said at the meeting that
the HDZ was using the suggested model to draft the electoral model,
but as one of the possibilities which could be discussed further, he
said.
For the sake of the truth, President Tudjman is willing for a
transcript of the meeting to be presented to the public, Ropus
said.
He held there was no need for a written opinion of the HDZ regarding
the electoral model, as requested by the Opposition Six, as
everything had been said during the talks.
Ropus reiterated his party held a consensus on the electoral law was
needed.
It was not excluded that president Tudjman holds another meeting
with opposition leaders. A consensus can be reached by conceding,
not ultimatums, Ropus said.
Ivo Sanader spoke to reporters about HDZ's cooperation with
European parties of democratic and Christian orientation, and
about the European Union's initiative entitled stability pact.
Croatia deems it necessary to be included from the very beginning in
the preparation phase of the conference on the pact which is
scheduled to be held in June.
Croatia does not consent to regional connecting as a condition for
accessing European associations, he stressed.
