SUNJA SUNJA, May 13 (Hina) - The Croatian Mine Removal Centre (HCR) on Thursday demonstrated an exercise in speedier and cheaper mine removal in Sunja, some 70 km south-east of Zagreb. The method applied during the exercise was the
reduction of suspected mined areas, which enables the de-mining of the actually mined areas, and is aimed at speeding up the de-mining process and reducing mine removal costs, HCR director Damir Gorseta said. The mine reduction project, which was applied in Sunja, has helped decrease the mined area by ten times. Today's exercise has shown that Croatia knows how to apply international achievements in de-mining and improve them, Gorseta said. Demonstrated in today's exercise were mixed mine removal procedures. SUNJA, May 13 (Hina) - The Croatian Mine Removal Centre (HCR) on
Thursday demonstrated an exercise in speedier and cheaper mine
removal in Sunja, some 70 km south-east of Zagreb.
The method applied during the exercise was the reduction of
suspected mined areas, which enables the de-mining of the actually
mined areas, and is aimed at speeding up the de-mining process and
reducing mine removal costs, HCR director Damir Gorseta said.
The mine reduction project, which was applied in Sunja, has helped
decrease the mined area by ten times. Today's exercise has shown
that Croatia knows how to apply international achievements in de-
mining and improve them, Gorseta said.
Demonstrated in today's exercise were mixed mine removal
procedures. Along with pyrotechnicians participating in the
exercise were a light remote-control mine removal device MV-2, a
machine for the removal of underbrush by Croatian inventor Franjo
Vukic, Hydrema Weimer M1520, an armoured field reconnaissance
vehicle Wolf, and trained dogs from Israel.
Gorseta thanked the Canadian and Japanese governments for settling
the costs of the Israeli company which is performing mine removal in
Sunja. He warned that the international community must increase
support for de-mining in Croatia, so that the process could be
accelerated and the number of victims reduced.
The exercise was attended by Canadian, Japanese and Russian
ambassadors, representatives and military attaches of other
embassies in Croatia, and representatives of international
organisations and the U.N. centre for humane de-mining.
