OSIJEK, Apr 21 (Hina) - The Beli Manastir crime police on Wednesday
confiscated 267 anti-tank mines of various types, weighing around
1,500kg, in a family house in the eastern Croatian town. This was
the largest confiscation of explosive devices discovered on one
location in Osijek-Baranja County.
The house, owned by Beli Manastir resident Z. M., a Serb, was
searched on the basis of a court order.
According to local police official Zeljko Vajda, the police found
the mentioned anti-tank mines, electric lighters, two ammunition
clips for a 7.9mm gun, and a 7.9mm sniper gun manufactured in
Yugoslavia in 1993. The items were placed in plastic bags walled in
the house's basement.
House owner Z. M. is well known to the police, who have been looking
for him a long time. He is sought for robbery, and has been known to
international circles after the Interpol issued a warrant. He is
believed to be on Yugoslav territory.
Today's search was attended by a representative of the Organisation
for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Vajda warned the responses to the government's last call for the
legalisation of arms had been poor, with only about 30 items
reported. The return of arms which cannot be legalised, including
guns, mines, and bombs, has also been poor, he added.
The police will continue to confiscate unreported arms, Vajda said.
Despite such large confiscations, he assessed the security
situation in eastern Croatia as "stable".
