SPLIT, May 7 (Hina) - The southern Croatian city of Split on Friday
saw the celebration of the day of its patron saint - Saint Doimus.
Mass was served in front of the Split Cathedral by the head of the
Catholic Church in Croatia, Zagreb Archbishop Josip Bozanic.
This is no time for fun, this is the time of great challenges when
one has to face the truth, Bozanic said.
We have suffered under the violence of war, but we have also been and
still are affected by social immorality, which, increased by war
and political transition, has taken on serious dimensions and is
present not only in individuals and groups, but also in some
representatives of authority, the Archbishop said, adding it was
the most destitute ones and workers who suffered most under the lack
of responsibility in the area of ethical and moral values.
During his visit to Croatia in 1998, Pope John Paul II called for
strengthening moral and ethical values which had been undermined by
earlier totalitarian regimes. The basic values are respect for
human life, and the rights and dignity of every person and every
nation, Bozanic said.
What causes concern is that the responsible ones are spending too
much time counting votes which would enable them to keep or seize
power, and are spending to little time working on long-term and
responsible programmes which would introduce moral values and new
relations in our state and social community. That is why this is the
time of a new beginning, the time in which we have to discover
reasons for new hopes, Bozanic said.
Numerous officials, including Ivica Kostovic, a personal
representative of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, and House of
Counties' President Katica Ivanisevic participated in a procession
through the centre of city, which took place before Mass.
