ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic said in
Zagreb on Thursday he was convinced a consensual solution
concerning the electoral law would be found soon.
"President Tudjman is determined to support a consensus between the
ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and opposition parties, and
I firmly believe a mutual solution will soon be found to the issue of
the electoral law," Granic said after a meeting with leaders of the
Croatian Parliamentary parties.
President of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Ivica Racan
expressed hope that Granic's optimism would be founded.
"It would be good if all of us talking about solving such important
issues for the future democratic life in Croatia speak from
positions of credibility. In this sense it would be good if the
talks we held with President Tudjman and president of the HDZ
parliamentary bench, Vladimir Seks, end up as credible," Racan
said.
Granic said an informative meeting held at Racan's initiative and
with the support of President Tudjman, focused on the current
situation in the relations between Croatia and European and trans-
Atlantic organisations in the light of new ideas such as the
stability pact and the new Us initiative for the stability of
southeast Europe.
The European Union and the United States are interested in this area
being stabilised so that the problem is not solved by an individual
country, but all countries in the region, from Slovenia, Croatia
and Hungary to Turkey, Bulgaria, Rumania and Greece, Granic said.
The speed of integrating into NATO and the European Union will
depend on the contribution of every country, there will be no new
associations, and Serbia, that is, Yugoslavia, will be included
only when it fulfils all conditions for membership," Granic said,
adding he only spoke on the basis of working material, as nobody has
yet seen the final paper about the initiatives.
He said the document will most probably be presented in Bonn on May
27 at a conference on the southeast of Europe.
Granic announced before the conference Croatia will initiate a
meeting of officials of all interested countries and try to
contribute to the final forming of a stability pact.
Racan said the issue of strategy of relations between Croatia and
Europe was an issue of all people in Croatia, it transcends one
government and one mandate.
