WASHINGTON, April 25 (Hina) - Croatia's Foreign Minister Mate
Granic on Saturday held a meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan on the Kosovo crisis, the developments in the region and
activities of Croatia as a UN member-country.
The talks were held in Annan's residence in New York, what is
outside the usual protocol.
Granic described the meeting as very successful and open.
At the talks he conveyed to Annan Croatian President Franjo
Tudjman's invitation to visit Croatia, and the UN Secretary General
accepted it with pleasure.
Granic also informed Annan of Croatia's stands on the incursion of
the Yugoslav army into the demilitarised zone at the Croatian-
Montenegrin border on the peninsula of Prevlaka. He acquainted the
Secretary General with data which Croatia possesses on the Yugoslav
army's deployment in the area under the control of UN monitors and
asked that the Security Council demand the pull-out of troops on the
grounds of Annan's report.
The two officials discussed the UNMOP mandate, and Granic
reiterated that his country was expecting a permanent solution
which should be reached as soon as possible. The Croatian diplomat
assessed that the current circumstances were unfavourable for the
talks between Zagreb and Belgrade on this matter which is for
Croatia a security issue.
Annan informed Granic about his proposal for a settlement to the
Kosovo crisis, which is similar to conditions set up by NATO. In
this regard, the UN Secretary General will travel soon to Boon and
Moscow to learn of opinions of German and Russian statesmen.
Annan is to appoint soon two experienced European diplomats as his
special envoys in south-eastern Europe. He told Granic that
possible candidates for the posts were Flavio Cotti of Switzerland,
Franz Vranitzky of Austria, Jiri Kukan of Slovakia and Genady
Udovenko of Ukraine.
The Croatian minister also spoke about Croatia's intentions and
concrete plans for its involvement in activities at East River.
