LUBLJANA/ZAGREB, April 30 (Hina) - A US judge Daniel H. Weinstein,
who is engaged in the privatisation of state property in Bosnia-
Herzegovina, could take over the mediation role in the Croatian-
Slovene dispute regarding the nuclear power plant Krsko.
This was claimed in a statement issued by the law firm
JAMS/Endispute, which said Weinstein had received a 'mediator of
the year' award from a San Francisco law firm, in which he has been
cooperating for about 10 years as a mediator in cases of violation
of industrial and intellectual property, and disputes regarding
insurance and environmental rights.
The news, published by the agency Business Wire, was also carried by
the Slovene news agency STA, which failed to get a statement from
Weinstein's spokesman on whether the information on his mediation
in the Krsko dispute was true.
According to the Business Wire statement, Weinstein was asked to
mediate in a dispute between Croatia and Slovenia regarding a
nuclear power plant.
The Krsko nuclear power plant was built jointly by Croatia and
Slovenia on Slovenia's territory about 20 years ago. After they
gained independence, the two countries failed to transform the then
valid agreement on the use of Krsko into an international
agreement, which was the cause of the dispute on whether Croatia is
a co-owner of or only an investor into the plant.
Weinstein was suggested as a mediator in the privatisation of state
property in Bosnia-Herzegovina by Richard Sklar, a deputy to the US
Ambassador at the United States. He is said to be a persistent and
experienced mediator, who participated in the resolution of
disputes worth more than US$1 billion last year.
Weinstein is also an expert on Balkan issues.
