BELGRADE PRESS SILENT ABOUT DRASKOVIC NEWS CONFERENCE

BELGRADE PRESS SILENT ABOUT DRASKOVIC NEWS CONFERENCE BELGRADE, April 28 (Hina) - Belgrade media on Wednesday kept quiet about a news conference held by the Yugoslav Vice-Premier and president of the Serb Reconstruction Movement, Vuk Draskovic. At the conference Draskovic suggested the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia should accept a resolution of the UN Security Council about the presence of international troops in Kosovo, even NATO troops if necessary. Belgrade's "Politika" daily ran a statement by the ultra-nationalist Serb Radical Party which, without a mention of Vuk Draskovic, condemned "treacherous and anti-Serb conduct" of those offering themselves to the "NATO aggressor as potential allies". BELGRADE, April 28 (Hina) - Belgrade media on Wednesday kept quiet about a news conference held by the Yugoslav Vice-Premier and president of the Serb Reconstruction Movement, Vuk Draskovic. At the conference Draskovic suggested the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia should accept a resolution of the UN Security Council about the presence of international troops in Kosovo, even NATO troops if necessary. Belgrade's "Politika" daily ran a statement by the ultra- nationalist Serb Radical Party which, without a mention of Vuk Draskovic, condemned "treacherous and anti-Serb conduct" of those offering themselves to the "NATO aggressor as potential allies". The Serb Radical Party said Serbia and the FRY would never accept the presence of any foreign troops, as this would mean the "occupation and destruction of the country". The radicals also stressed Serbia and the FRY would defend themselves from "external aggressors" and that they would "quickly and efficiently remove the small number of their accomplices in the country". The reserve of the official Belgrade towards Draskovic's initiative holds room for doubt whether Draskovic had appeared as a "single shooter" or did he receive support for his initiative, as he himself said, from the presidents of the FRY and Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic and Milan Milutinovic, as well as from Russian mediator Viktor Tchernomidyn. Unofficial sources in Belgrade presume Draskovic indeed does have their support, but that his initiative will face great obstacles from Serb radicals Vojislav Seselj and certain circles in the Socialist Party of Serbia and the Yugoslav left wing. A Government by-law came into effect in Serbia on Wednesday by which the owners of passenger vehicles will as of May 1 receive coupons for 20 litres of petrol per month. Until now the amount of fuel envisaged has been 40 litres. For legal subjects, the amount of petrol has been decreased from 40 litres to 35 litres a month. (hina) lml jn
