NEW YORK, April 27 (Hina) - Yugoslav army troops are withdrawing
from the UN-controlled demilitarised area of Prevlaka, and in this
way UNMOP has been enabled to continue carrying out its mission, UN
Security Council Chairman, French Ambassador Alain Dejammet, said
in New York on Tuesday.
Last Wednesday the incident took place on the Montenegrin side near
the border with Croatia on the peninsula of Prevlaka, when Yugoslav
Army soldiers entered the UN-controlled area, violating UN
Security Council resolutions.
Croatia protested over the incident to the Security Council. Last
Saturday Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic met UN Secretary
General Koffi Annan in New York to discuss the matter.
After yesterday's Security Council session, French Ambassador
Dejammet told reporters that the Secretariat had informed of the
developments on Prevlaka and that the movement had been enabled for
UNMOP members again.
According to some sources, the head of the UNMOP mission, Colonel
Graeme Williams, on Tuesday held talks with the commander of
Yugoslav Army, Vice-Admiral Milan Zec, who told the Colonel that
the Yugoslav Army would pull out from the demilitarised area by the
end of the day.
UNMOP subsequently confirmed the pull-out adding that it would
continue controlling the area on the Montenegrin side of the
border, just as they did until April 21.
