WASHINGTON, Apr 22 (Hina) - The leaders of NATO member-countries
and delegations of countries surrounding the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia on Sunday adopted a final document at the end of a
working meeting which focused on the Kosovo crisis, and which was
held in Washington as part of NATO's 50th anniversary summit.
The presidential statement said the working meeting discussed the
current situation in the south Yugoslav province of Kosovo, how it
affects the countries in the region, and a long-term strategy of
security, prosperity, and stability in the south-east of Europe.
Among else, the statement condemned the continuation of violence
and intimidation in Kosovo and stressed that it must stop.
Touching on neighbouring countries, the statement expressed
support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all
countries in the region.
The heads of state or governments of NATO countries are aware that
countries neighbouring Yugoslavia have been especially affected by
the humanitarian, political, and economic consequences of the
crisis. They thanked the countries in the region for their
solidarity and efforts invested in helping NATO and the
international community achieve its goals.
Confirmed was that the security of Yugoslavia's neighbours was of
direct and real importance for NATO's members, and that NATO would
respond to any Belgrade challenge to neighbouring countries which
might occur as a result of NATO's operations against Yugoslavia.
The participants in the meeting said their common goal was to build
a better future for the region, including Yugoslavia, based on
democracy, justice, economic ties and security cooperation. A
significant component in the process is the full implementation of
the Dayton peace agreements. It is necessary to create a long-term,
all-encompassing strategy which will ensure stability and progress
based on democratic principles and an intensified political and
economic development.
The presidential statement said that NATO and the countries in the
region will continue with consultations on the current Kosovo
crisis and the development of a wider strategy in the region.
