IS CROATIA READY TO COPE WITH MILLENNIUM BUG?

ZADAR/ZAGREB, April 18 (Hina) - If you wake up on 1 January 2000 and feel cold since the central heating does not work or have to go down the staircases since the lift is broken-down, don't' be surprised when you see a bobby, instead of traffic lights, regulating the traffic in the street. You should be aware that you are also affected by the millennium bug just as others in the world. You can read what is the millennium bug in an article written by Ariana Baraba in the Zadar-based "Narodni List" At the night between 31 December 1999 and 1 January 2000 the so-called 'computer paradox' known as the millennium bug will happen. Computers programmed to recognise dates with only six numbers will see the date 01/01/00 and interpret it as 1 January 1900. A coordinator of the World Bank, James P. Bond, has said that research carried out in 139 countries in development showed that only 54 of them have their own programmes to cope with the Year 2000 problem. According to the World Bank, Croatia is moderately aware of the problem. Croatia is in the circle of those countries to which the World Bank is ready to help in overcoming a possible shock caused by the millennium bug. The question poses itself whether Croatia will be ready to encounter the Year 2000 Problem. (hina) ms
