LONDON, Apr 14 (Hina) - The Lloyd's of London insurance company has
changed in part a decision under which Croatia was included among
war risk countries on account of NATO's air strikes against
neighbouring Yugoslavia.
Croatia's Adriatic is no longer considered a risk zone for ships in
its entirety, but only its south-east part, south of the Neretva and
Korcula canals, including Croatia's southern-most port of
Dubrovnik, the director of the Insurers' Alliance at Lloyd's,
Rupert Atkin, told Hina on Wednesday.
The information was also confirmed at Croatia Lloyd in Zagreb.
Atkin said for the time being, Lloyd's was not paying an additional
insurance premium for Croatia or any of its parts.
Lloyd's reversed its initial decision, of March 29, after
considering a protest the Croatian government made last week.
Having been ranked among war risk areas has not resulted in
increased insurance premiums for ships sailing Croatian waters,
but has resulted in negative publicity for the country, Croatian
shipping circles in London say. As an example, they cite the fact
that some 20 ships have cancelled arrivals at Dubrovnik.
Croatian shipping circles link Llyod's inclusion of Croatia among
war risk zones to a recommendation of the British government to
British trade ships not to sail into Montenegrin/Yugoslav ports;
the avoidance of Croatian ports was recommended by mistake. The
mistake was corrected the next day, but the impression remained
that Croatia was within the conflict area.
