ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - The Serb People's Party (SNS) demanded the
immediate discontinuation of NATO air raids against the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia/Montenegro) and the resumption of
the negotiating process, under the auspices of the United Nations.
Advocating consistently the peace and equality of all nations as
well as the right of ethnic Albanians to the full autonomy in
Kosovo, in compliance with international standards, this political
party of Croatian Serbs warned that such a solution to the Kosovo
problem should not put in question the territorial integrity of
Serbia and Yugoslavia, read a declaration adopted by SNS members at
the party's assembly in Zagreb on Saturday.
The SNS supported appeals for peace and tolerance forwarded by John
Paul II, Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Pavle and the Catholic
Archbishop of Zagreb, Msgr. Josip Bozanic.
The declaration called on Croatian Serbs to behave in a dignified
manner in this difficult situation.
The Croatian Government was asked by the party to continue
conducting its own programme for establishing the national
confidence.
Submitting a report on the work of the party in 1998, the SNS leader,
Milan Djukic, claimed that the position and the status of the Serb
people in Croatia had not yet been resolved.
He told the assembly that the SNS, being a legitimate
representative of Croatian Serbs, would not stop raising still
unresolved questions in connection with the status and position of
Serbs in Croatia. It would also continue representing and caring
for the Croatian Serb interests, Djukic added.
Speaking of the chief tasks of the SNS in this year, he pointed to
four key issues.
According to him they are: unsettled status of Serb refugees;
discrimination against Serb residents in towns in a process of
enabling them to exercise their rights; discriminatory attitude
toward the right to the return of property and reconstruction; and
the demand that the Croatian Government must give response to
"hundreds of killings committed by members of the Croatian Army,
HV, and police."
The SNS is optimistic about the future of Croatia and the stay and
existence of Serbs in this country, Djukic said.
He added that preparations for the forthcoming parliamentary
elections were also one of the party's duties this year.
