ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - There is no significant incidence of anti-
Semitism in Croatia, especially not as a collective occurrence,
although there are individual incidences which should be reacted
to. This is to be done primarily by those among whom such cases
appear, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) spokesman Ivica Ropus told
reporters in Zagreb on Friday.
Ropus was commenting on claims by the Coordination of Jewish
Communities in Croatia and representatives of other Jewish
organisations that anti-Semitism was gaining in strength in
Croatia.
The attitude towards that issue is a gauge for humanity, democracy
and respect for human rights, which is the orientation of Croatian
authority. Croatia has accepted the painful legacy of the suffering
of Jews in its recent history and it has supported their activities;
President Tudjman himself has contributed to the improvement of
relations between Croatia and Israel, which today are on a level
higher than ever.
Many distinguished members of the Jewish people are holding posts
in the highest bodies of Croatian state authority, numerous
Croatian delegations have paid tribute to the victims of Holocaust
during their visits to Israel; the State Archive is cooperating
with the Holocaust Museum, Ropus said, adding that Jewish culture
in Croatia is represented on a very high level.
