ZAGREB, Feb 24 (Hina) - The Alliance of Croatian Independent Unions
(SSSH) announced it would stage a big protest rally on Labour Day,
May 1, instead of the usual festivities, due to the deteriorating
social and economic situation in the country.
Unless things change for the better within a month, the SSSH will
call on the Government to step down before May 1, the Alliance's
president, Davor Juric, told a news conference in Zagreb on
Wednesday.
The situation is more serious than had been expected, and the crisis
got worse two months earlier than the SSSH had foreseen at its
congress at the end of last year, Juric said.
According to data from January, an average of 33 employees lose
their jobs every hour, and the number of unemployed has risen to
310,000, about 125,000 do not receive regular salaries, 182,000 are
employed with insolvent companies, and 57 per cent of them have
salaries that are lower than the state average salary, while a third
of the population is living on the edge of starvation and do not have
sufficient resources for sustenance, the SSSH assessed.
The reconstruction of the Government has brought nothing new,
social dialogue is yielding no results, and the union auditing of
privatisation is being politically blocked, leaving the unions to
protest as the last resort, Juric stressed.
