ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - Esperanza (Nada) Tambic de Bilanovic Sakic
was released on Monday evening from the Zagreb County prison after
the State Attorney's Office in Zagreb today terminated her
prosecution.
The State Attorney's Office said in a statement today the pre-trial
investigation did not confirm suspicions that Sakic (born 1926) had
committed a war crime against civilian population during World War
II.
Sakic's court-appointed attorney Branko Seric told reporters Sakic
wished to stay in Zagreb and was not going to leave Croatia.
The main reason she is going to stay in Croatia is that Yugoslav
authorities are still conducting proceedings against her and
demand her extradition, Seric said adding there was "not even a
theoretical possibility that that might happen, because Mrs Sakic
is a Croatian citizen".
Asked how she felt, Sakic said she felt excellent and was very happy
that the proceedings ended the way they did.
On July 28, last year, the Zagreb County Court decided to initiate
an investigation against Esperanza Tambic de Bilanovic Sakic,
suspected of having committed a war crime as a member of an Ustasha
unit at the Stara Gradiska concentration camp.
Argentina extradited Sakic to Croatia on November 2, and she
remained in custody until today.
