ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - Referring to an article of the magazine
"Okolis" by the Croatian State Department for the Protection of
Nature and Environment, Hina issued a news item headlined
"Protected Griffon Sponsored By 'Fima'" on January 22.
After the news item was issued by the media, the head of the project
for the protection of the griffon, Dr. Goran Susic, reported that a
contract between the Cres-based EKO-centar Caputinsulae and the
Varazdin-based broker house 'Fima' had unfortunately been broken.
Susic said 'Fima', which used to be a general sponsor, ceased paying
monthly instalments due to its financial problems. Therefore, the
deal had been broken, he added.
The broker house's failure to provide the financial backing forced
the Cres-based centre to dismiss a worker who had been in charge of
maintaining good conditions in the haven for these birds on the
island of Cres.
The Cres centre is in search of new sponsors and donators.
The project aimed at protecting the griffon in Croatia has been
faced the with the gravest crisis since it was launched.
Susic requested that the State Department for the Protection of
Nature should be more actively engaged in the project.
He asked Hina on phone to forward an appeal to everybody who can
help, to take part in the protection of the most endangered bird in
the country.
The griffon has been protected in Croatia since 1986.
According to the EKO-centar, there are about 250 to 300 male and
female griffons in the country and half of them live on Cres.
Locally known as "Cres eagles", the griffon is unique, as they build
their nests on cliffs overlooking the sea, whereas other griffons
settle in mountains and canyons.
Griffon is about one metre long, weighs eight to nine kilos, has a
wing span of up to three metres and can fly at the speed of almost
120km/h.
In the special ornithological reserve on Cres, baby griffons have
even been given names, such as: Mauro, Stefan, Hristo, Indiana
Jones, Anthony Little House, Dragec Vragec, Jelena, Fantom, Veliki
Gnu, etc.
